“Recommendation: Stop Feeling Bad for Yourself and Listen to WTC 9/11”

Even the artwork is brilliant. I highly recommend getting hold of a physical copy, or checking it out from your library. (It’s classical music, so I’m sure it’s still on the shelf.) The booklet insert looks like no more than a gathering of cumulonimbus clouds, but turn it over: you’ll see little bit more sky on the top, and peaking out from the bottom corner is a tiny edge of the World Trade Center building on fire.

The last words you hear are “and there’s the world / and there’s the world right here,” followed by a dial tone. It’s a disturbing way to end it, but then Steve Reich points out that WTC can also stand for “world to come.”

Hopeful, in a way.
