“On Debuts”

Two former debutantes, Macy and Lacy, drinking mint juleps in the Alabama sun.

MACY: Oh, but it was so lovely, Lacy. I don’t think I could imagine a better debut than yours. There was everything a debut required: drinking, women, and men.

LACY: There are just certain moments that, the remembering of, go to make me feel regretful.

MACY: Do you mean when Big Bully Jason stood up inside the punch bowl?

LACY: No.

MACY: Do you mean when Li’l Loudmouth Peter started taking apart the dance floor while people were still dancing?

LACY: No.

MACY: Do you mean when Sad Faced Mitch and Pants-Too-Long Jim brought their roosters in to the center of the room and started taking bets for a fight?

LACY: No.

MACY: Well I’m confused then, Lacy Marie Summerson. What are you regretful of?

LACY: I only wish Papa hadn’t hired Old Forgetful Jeb to be the photographer. Because he forgot to put film in his camera, I do not remember any of the moments you just said.
