Etymology of leftovers

Google N-Gram viewer puts the first usage of “leftovers” at just before 1900.

The OED has the first use of “left-overs” as a noun, from an 1891 issue of Cassell’s Family Magazine:  “They all like change of diet, so I provide all sorts of things, with the result that the ‘left-overs’, as I call them, are appalling.”
